Living things & habitats
Exploring food chains, habitats, classification of living things, and how organisms adapt to their environment
- 1
Put this food chain in the correct order, starting with the producer. Put these in order: Fox, Grass, Rabbit
Answer: - 2
Match each term to its definition. Match each item on the left to one on the right. Left: Producer, Consumer, Predator, Prey Right: A plant that makes its own food, An animal that eats other organisms, An animal that hunts other animals, An animal that is hunted by others
Answer: - 3
What is a habitat? A) The natural place where an organism lives B) A type of food that animals eat C) A group of the same animals D) The colour of an animal
Answer: - 4
True or false? Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone. A) True B) False
Answer: - 5
Match each animal to its correct classification group. Match each item on the left to one on the right. Left: Frog, Eagle, Salmon, Snake Right: Amphibian, Bird, Fish, Reptile
Answer: - 6
What would happen to the rabbits if all the foxes in an area disappeared? A) The rabbit population would increase because fewer are being eaten B) The rabbit population would decrease C) Nothing would change D) The rabbits would become foxes
Answer: - 7
Put this woodland food chain in the correct order. Put these in order: Owl, Oak tree (leaves), Mouse, Caterpillar
Answer: - 8
A cactus has thick stems and spines instead of leaves. How does this help it survive in the desert? A) Thick stems store water and spines reduce water loss and protect from animals B) The spines help it catch insects for food C) Thick stems help it move to find water D) Spines attract rain towards the plant
Answer: - 9
Deforestation destroys woodland habitats. Why does this affect the whole food chain? A) Removing trees (producers) means herbivores lose food, which then reduces food for predators B) Only the trees are affected C) Animals can easily find new homes D) Food chains do not depend on plants
Answer: - 10
True or false? A pond habitat suits fish but would not suit a desert lizard. A) True B) False

Living things & habitats · for parents and teachers
- 1
Grass, Rabbit, Fox
Food chains start with a producer (plant) that makes its own food. The rabbit eats the grass (consumer), and the fox eats the rabbit (predator). Energy flows from plant to animal.
- 2
Producer → A plant that makes its own food; Consumer → An animal that eats other organisms; Predator → An animal that hunts other animals; Prey → An animal that is hunted by others
In a food chain: producers (plants) make food from sunlight. Consumers eat other organisms. Predators hunt prey. The same animal can be both predator and prey.
- 3
The natural place where an organism lives
A habitat is the natural environment where an organism lives. It provides everything the organism needs to survive: food, water, shelter, and the right conditions.
- 4
True
True. Vertebrates are animals with a backbone (spine). Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals are all vertebrates. Invertebrates (insects, worms, jellyfish) have no backbone.
- 5
Frog → Amphibian; Eagle → Bird; Salmon → Fish; Snake → Reptile
Animals are classified by their features: frogs are amphibians (moist skin, live on land and water), eagles are birds (feathers), salmon are fish (scales, gills), snakes are reptiles (dry scales).
- 6
The rabbit population would increase because fewer are being eaten
Without foxes to eat them, rabbit numbers would increase because fewer are dying. However, eventually there might be too many rabbits and not enough food for them all.
- 7
Oak tree (leaves), Caterpillar, Mouse, Owl
The oak tree produces food in its leaves (producer). Caterpillars eat the leaves. Mice eat caterpillars (and seeds). Owls hunt and eat mice. Energy flows through the chain.
- 8
Thick stems store water and spines reduce water loss and protect from animals
Cacti are adapted to dry habitats. Their thick stems store water for dry periods. Spines (instead of leaves) have less surface area, reducing water loss through evaporation, and protect the plant from thirsty animals.
- 9
Removing trees (producers) means herbivores lose food, which then reduces food for predators
Trees are producers at the base of the food chain. Without them, herbivores have no food and their numbers fall. This means predators also have less food. The whole food chain collapses from the bottom up.
- 10
True
True. Animals are adapted to particular habitats. A desert lizard needs dry, warm conditions and would not survive in a pond.
