Answer key
Distribution of natural resources · for parents and teachers
- 1
Oil, gas and coal
Oil, natural gas and coal are fossil fuels. They formed underground over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and animals.
- 2
renewable
Renewable energy comes from sources that are constantly replenished, such as the sun, wind, water and geothermal heat. They will not run out.
- 3
True
Fossil fuels are non-renewable because they form too slowly to be replaced once used. The world's supplies are finite and will eventually run out.
- 4
Something useful that comes from nature
Natural resources are useful things from nature, like water, wood and oil.
- 5
Solar power → Renewable energy; Coal → Non-renewable fossil fuel; Iron → Metal mineral; Hydroelectric power → Renewable from flowing water
Solar and hydro power are renewable. Coal is a non-renewable fossil fuel. Iron is a metal mineral that, like all minerals, is finite.
- 6
Wind power
Wind power is renewable because wind keeps blowing as long as the sun heats the Earth unevenly. Coal, gas and oil are non-renewable fossil fuels.
- 7
False
Renewable energy still has some environmental impact. Building turbines, dams or solar farms uses materials and land, but it is generally much less harmful than fossil fuels.
- 8
water
Fresh water is found in rivers, lakes and aquifers underground. Only a small fraction of the Earth's water is fresh, so it is a precious and unevenly distributed resource.
- 9
It uses more than it produces from its own sources
Although the UK produces some oil and gas in the North Sea, demand is greater than supply, so the country imports the rest from other producers.
- 10
Solar power, Wind power, Natural gas, Coal
Solar and wind are renewable. Natural gas and coal are both fossil fuels (non-renewable), though gas tends to produce less carbon dioxide when burned than coal.
