What is the 11+?

The 11+ is an entrance test used by grammar schools and some independent schools to select pupils for Year 7. Children usually sit it in Year 6, in the September of the year they apply, so most preparation happens in Year 5 and over the summer before. The papers test maths and English, and most areas also include verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning.

Which test will my child sit?

It depends on the area. Many grammar schools use papers from GL Assessment, while some counties and consortiums set their own (for example the CSSE test in Essex). The subjects are broadly the same, but the exact format and timing vary, so always check the admissions page for the specific schools you are applying to. Our papers follow the widely used GL style.

How should we use these?

Start early and keep sessions short and regular rather than cramming. Sit one paper at a time under quiet, timed conditions, then go through the mark scheme together to spot the topics that need more work. Little and often beats long, stressful sessions.
